Little Women 1994 - Newman and Nostalgia

The first soundtrack that I bought was "Little Women" by Thomas Newman. While I talked about it briefly in the very first podcast episode, I knew I would want to do a deep dive at some point. Not only was revisiting it nostalgic for me but the whole tone of this movie is nostalgic. Thomas Newman loves to live in keys that aren't quite major or minor which results in having a little melancholy in the joys and a little bit of hope in the sorrows. This fits very well for the March family with a group of girls growing up in the Civil War, dealing with heartache, death, dreams, and weddings. Much of the instrumentation is higher with flutes, violins, trumpet, and bells which adds to the elegance and youthfulness of the little women. I hope you enjoy revisiting this score as much as I did!
